How to activate the Emergency Exception on the iPhone (And what is that…)

You've almost certainly never heard of the iPhone Emergency Exception, but don't worry, it's less serious than you think.

The emergency exception is used when, even though you have Do Not Disturb on, your iPhone rings if someone in particular calls or messages you. Do you see how it wasn't that bad?

When you configure the do not disturb option you can select specific groups of contacts to receive calls, but the option that only one person (or the ones you want) can skip the Do not disturb is not so accessible.

By default these are the groups you can select:

  • Contacts: This includes all your contact list, if the person calling you is there you will receive the call.
  • Amigos: If you have labeled a contact as a friend, you will receive their call even if you have Do Not Disturb activated.
  • Family: Well that, your contacts labeled as siblings, parents, partner, etc. They will be able to call you without any problem.
  • Favorites: If you have a list of favorite contacts all of them will be able to call you if you choose this option in the do not disturb settings.

Do not bother

The bad thing about these permissions is that they are too broad, that is, you may not mind your mother calling you while you have the Do Not Disturb option activated, but you do not want to receive calls from your uncle. Both contacts will be labeled as family so if you have this group activated you will receive the call.

How to receive calls and messages from specific contacts with "Do not disturb" activated

Luckily there is a much more effective way to filter who you want to call you or not, you can create a Exception for emergency, that is, you can tell your iPhone that you want to receive calls and messages from a specific contact, even if you have the Do Not Disturb option activated.

To do this follow these steps:

  1. Enter your iPhone agenda and select the contact you want "save" of the Do Not Disturb option.
  2. Once in your contact file, tap on the button Edit at the top right of the screen.
  3. Now tap on the option to change the ringtone.
  4. The first option you will come across will be Emergency exception if you activate that button you will receive calls and messages from that contact even with Do Not Disturb activated.

And that's it, this way you can create a much more accurate list of people who can call you while you have Do Not Disturb turned on.

Much better that way, don't you think?
